1. Candyman

Since the latest Candyman movie was just recently released, fans might want to revisit the first movie in the franchise. Candyman (1992) is one of the most popular films written by Clive Barker.

7. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

8. Day of the Dead

George A. Romero’s classic Night of the Living Dead might be public domain, but this sequel is not. Dawn of the Dead was far more popular, but Day of the Dead is still an important film for zombie lore.

9. Black Sunday

This is another very important Italian horror film which informed the genre as a whole for years to come. Black Sunday was directed by Mario Bava, who has since become a household name in the horror community.

10. Re-Animator

12. The Stuff

Are you eating it? Or is it eating you? This is one of the most beloved cult classics of the 80s. The Stuff was directed by Larry Cohen, who was also known for the It’s Alive franchise.

14. Dan Curtis’ Dracula

There have been several adaptations of Dracula over the years, and this one is quite good. Jack Palance (Shane, City Slickers) plays the lead role so well that he inspired future adaptations.

The film was directed by Dan Curtis, who was better known at the time for Dark Shadows. He also directed Burnt Offerings and Trilogy of Terror, two popular horror films from the era.

15. Tales From the Crypt

This movie should not be confused with the popular television series of the same name. This is actually the original Tales From the Crypt, and it’s a classic horror anthology.

16. Children of the Corn

1. Train to Busan

This modern zombie flick is one of the most beloved South Korean horror films of recent years. Although it’s essentially “zombies on a train,” most audiences agree this is a pretty good movie. The special effects and make-up are especially memorable.

There is also a sequel to this movie, but it is not yet free to watch.

2. V/H/S

If you love found footage horror, this is one of the more popular films in the subgenre.

It’s also a great example of an anthology horror movie, as it features multiple segments from a variety of different filmmakers including Ti West and Adam Wingard.

3. The Sacrament

This is another movie directed by Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers). Although most of his films are more traditional horror fare, this one is a bit different.

The Sacrament tells the tale of a Vice documentary crew investigating a cult when things go awry. While it wasn’t particularly well-rated upon release, we recommend giving this movie a chance.

4. The Void

Fans of the modern horror revival will love this Lovecraft inspired atmospheric film. The Void was actually directed by two filmmakers: Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie.

While Kostanski has gone on to direct Psycho Goreman, Gillespie is better known behind the scenes on movies like Pacific Rim and The Shape of Water. If nothing else, this is certainly a well shot and beautiful film.

5. Beyond the Black Rainbow

Those who know, know. This is one of the first films of director Panos Cosmatos, who has become one of the most intriguing horror filmmakers of recent years.

Fans might also recognize his work in the fantastic Nicolas Cage film Mandy. This one is certainly different, but just as twisted and disturbing as anything else Panos has made.

6. Prom Night

After becoming a horror icon in Halloween, Jamie Lee Curtis went on to star in this popular slasher. Leslie Nielsen (Airplane, The Naked Gun) also has a minor role in this film.

While it wasn’t very well rated, audiences loved this movie and it made tons of money. Prom Night was so popular it spawned an entire series of horror films, including the sequel we’ll cover below.

7. Prom Night II: Hello Mary Lou

Truth be told, this isn’t actually a sequel to Prom Night. Even so, the plot was similar enough that studios saw an opportunity to make money off the franchise. Although it’s not a true sequel, this might actually be better than the original film.

Sadly, Jamie Lee Curtis is not in this movie. However, notable actors like Michael Ironside (Scanners, Starship Troopers) and Louis Ferreira (Saw IV, Friday the 13th: The Series) make an appearance.

8. Chopping Mall

This might not technically be a good film, but it’s plenty of fun for horror fans. Watch as a team of robots go on a killing spree in the mall they are supposed to defend!

Stars include Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, From Beyond) and Dick Miller (The Burbs, Gremlins) among others. Trust us, find some friends to watch this with, grab a few drinks, and have a blast.

9. Grave Encounters

This is another movie that came out in the midst of a glut of found footage flicks. What sets this one apart from others is the concept based on ghost hunter shows that were also popular at the time.

As you might guess, a group of ghost hunters actually stumble upon a terrifying situation. This was actually a pretty decent movie despite the fact that it’s cashing in on popular tropes of the era.

10. The Prophecy

As the name implies, this is a biblical horror film about a religious prophecy being fulfilled on earth. Christopher Walken (The Dead Zone, Pulp Fiction) is the main star, but there are other notable actors in this movie.

Elias Koteas (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Eric Stoltz (Anaconda, The Butterfly Effect) also make an appearance. This film was popular enough to launch a franchise, but most of the sequels weren’t very good.

11. Cockneys vs Zombies

Following the success of films like Shaun of the Dead, there were a glut of horror comedies like this one. Although some of them weren’t very good, this one was absolutely hilarious.

Sadly, the movie didn’t do well in theaters and fell under the radar of several audiences. Trust us on this one, if you’re in need of a good laugh, Cockneys vs Zombies will do the trick.

12. The Blob

This is arguably one of the most well-known horror movies on our list. Despite its age, this movie still holds up and there’s a reason it’s considered a classic. Steve McQueen (The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven) turns in a memorable performance.

The Blob became such a beloved film that it inspired a remake in the 80’s. Sadly, that adaptation is not yet one of Crackle’s free horror movies with ads.

13. Sleepaway Camp

This is one of those popular cult classic horror films that is a must-see for horror hounds.

14. Bad Moon

 

This is one of the better horror movies from the 90’s, and it’s a great werewolf movie as well! Mariel Hemingway (Superman IV) and Michael Parรฉ (The Virgin Suicides) star in this fairly straightforward horror flick.

Despite being a bit predictable, Bad Moon is still an enjoyable cult classic. If you haven’t seen it yet, we recommend giving this one a shot.

15. Brain Dead

This is another cult classic produced by none other than Roger Corman. Although it is a relatively low budget film, they managed to bring in a pretty good cast.

Both Bill Pullman (Independence Day) and Bill Paxton (Near Dark, Aliens) star in this horror movie. As you can probably tell just from the poster art, the makeup and special effects in this movie are quite good.

16. JeruZalem

This is another found footage horror flick that you might want to check out. While it’s certainly not the best of the bunch, it is one of the more interesting offerings that the subgenre has seen in recent years.

I promise you, even if you think you know exactly what is going to happen in this movie, chances are you won’t predict everything!

17. Ben

This is actually the sequel to the original Willard (1971), and it’s another tale of killer rats. While this one wasn’t as well received as its predecessor, it has become a cult classic.

Ben stars Lee Montgomery (Burnt Offerings) and Joe Campanella (Night Gallery, Mannix) among many other notable actors. Although the movie didn’t do well in theatres, it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music.

18. The Exorcist III

As the name implies, this is the third movie in the Exorcist series, and it’s actually pretty well rated. William Peter Blatty, the author who wrote the original Exorcist novel, came on to direct this sequel.

Horror icons George C. Scott (The Changeling) and Brad Dourif (Child’s Play) star in this film. If you needed any other reason to check this one out, I don’t know what to tell you.

19. Black Christmas

If you’re in the mood for a holiday horror movie, this is undoubtedly one of the best. Believe it or not, this film was actually directed by Bob Clark, who went on to direct A Christmas Story. Anyone up for a double bill?

This movie is full of character actors including Margot Kidder (The Amityville Horror), Olivia Hussey (It, Ice Cream Man), Kier Dullea (2001: A Space Odyssey), and John Saxson (A Nightmare on Elm Street).

20. Jack Frost

Not to be confused with any family-friendly fare, this is actually a horror film with a festive theme. It’s also one of the more humorous and ridiculous flicks on our list!

Nothing about this movie should be taken seriously, and the proof of that is the name of the town in which it takes place: Snowmanton.

Although it’s silly, the premise is actually pretty interesting, and this one is definitely worth your time if you need a good laugh.

20 Free Horror Movies With Ads on Freevee

This is one of the lesser known streaming services that offers free horror movies with ads. Even so, they have some pretty great titles available to watch. One of the nice things about Freevee is that they have their movies listed on Amazon. You don’t even need Amazon Prime to watch these movies! 

Freevee claims to have fewer ads than traditional television, and there is no subscription required. You will need an Amazon account, but that’s also free. You can also download the Freevee app on any Amazon Fire stick, Roku, PS4 or Xbox One.

1. The Invisible Man (2020)

While this is certainly one of the best modern horror films of the last few years, we must include a trigger warning for anyone who has suffered sexual abuse, as this movie tells the tale of a young woman being harassed and gaslit by her former partner.

That said, the film is so well crafted that it absolutely warrants at least one viewing. Starring Elisabeth Moss (Us, The Handmaid’s Tale) and directed by Leigh Whannell (Insidious: Chapter 3, Saw), this is one of the best adaptations of the classic Universal horror films made in modern times.

2. Let Us Prey

This is another relatively modern horror movie that may have fallen under your radar. What sets this movie apart from other horror flicks? It plays out more like a horror graphic novel than a film. Let Us Prey also features elements of a siege film like Assault on Precinct 13.

There were a few notable actors attached to this movie. Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones) plays the lead role alongside Pollyanna McIntosh (The Walking Dead) and many others.

3. Cropsey

If you’re looking for a change of pace, consider watching this horror documentary about the Cropsey killer. Director Joshua Zeman has made a name for himself with documentaries focusing on urban legends and serial killers.

His latest work is The Sons of Sam and you can watch it on Netflix. Zeman has a natural sense for storytelling and he draws audiences in by revealing the facts behind fiction.

4. Killer Legends

Joshua Zeman actually followed up Cropsey with this documentary about urban legends. While he covers some of the same ground in this one, he also goes into other subjects.

If you’ve ever wondered about the urban legend of tainted Halloween candy, this is a must watch. He also covers the subject of killer clowns and the Phantom Killer from The Town That Dreaded Sundown.

5. Triangle

Fans of horror movies like Death Ship and Ghost Ship should definitely check this one out. Although some of the CGI is pretty bad, the premise of the film is quite unique and interesting. Let’s just say the title says more about the plot than you might think at first glance.

The cast includes faces like Melissa George (30 Days of Night), Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), and Michael Dorman (The Invisible Man).

6. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer

This movie is loosely based on the story of Henry Lee Lucas, who admitted to killing hundreds of people. Of course, since this movie was released, it has become apparent that Henry might not have been guilty. Regardless, this is definitely one of those classic horror films everyone needs to see at least once.

Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy) plays the lead role in this movie. Tom Towles (Night of the Living Dead, House of 1,000 Corpses) plays Henry’s friend Otis.

7. The Gate

If you’re in the market for another cult classic, this movie is pretty much the definition of that term. Modern audiences might find certain aspects of this movie silly by today’s standards. Even so, the special effects are pretty awesome, and the plot is equally weird and creepy.

Stephen Dorff (Blade, Immortals) takes the lead, playing a kid who accidentally releases demons on earth. If that sounds like your cup of tea, we highly recommend checking this one out.

8. Gretel & Hansel (2020)

This is one of the most recent adaptations of the classic tale featuring two kids who are lured into the house of a witch, and it’s honestly one of the best versions we’ve seen in years.

There are times when it seems the film is somewhat inspired by the Giallo movement, and other moments are reminiscent of The Witch.

Gretel & Hansel was directed by Osgood Perkins, who has been making a name for himself in the horror genre with excellent films like The Blackcoat’s Daughter. If you enjoy this trippy adaptation of the classic fairy tale, make sure to check out his other work as well!

9. Wolfcop

If you’re looking for a good horror comedy, this movie should do the trick. Wolfcop was practically made for modern audiences, which is to say that it’s intentionally cheesy. As the name implies, this is indeed a film about a werewolf cop. Although this one fell under the radar for some viewers, it actually has a sequel as well.

The special effects on display in this movie are pretty impressive for its budget. Starring as the titular character is Leo Fafard, who is more used to being behind the camera than in front of it. That said, he does a great job with this character and really chews up the role.

10. The Hunt (2020)

This is another modern horror flick that is actually somewhat decent. Not everyone is going to love it, but there is a pretty obvious subtextual message about how little the rich actually care about the poor and the class warfare that takes place as a result.

Ultimately, this is something of a dark comedy, and if you get the joke, you’ll probably have a good time with this one. Oh by the way, it pays to know something about the George Orwell story Animal Farm when watching this movie!

11. The New Daughter

This is the definition of a movie that fell between the cracks, likely because it’s very formulaic. Even so, despite the clear and obvious formula it sticks to, this film is actually a lot better than most of its kind.

Directed by Luiso Berdejo, who also wrote both the first and third REC movies (which you can watch on Tubi), there are some impressive elements of The New Daughter. Even the way this movie ends is up to interpretation, because although you can see someone approaching the screen, you never find out who they are.

There’s a certain level of mystery to this film that you won’t find in others using the same formula, and that makes it worth at least one watch.

12. Night of the Demons

This is one of the more popular horror flicks from the 80s, and the story takes place on Halloween night. Director Kevin Tenney was also known for other cult classics from the era including Witchboard and The Cellar.

13. Late Phases: Night of the Lone Wolf

Have you ever noticed that there aren’t as many werewolf movies as there are films featuring vampires, zombies, and other popular monsters?

Well, this is one of the better werewolf films of the last decade, and we highly recommend giving it a shot. Although it is a bit slow paced, there’s still plenty to love about Late Phases.

14. Piranha (1978)

While the 90’s adaptation of this film is frequently free to watch on various services, the original film from Joe Dante isn’t always available. Thankfully, Freevee is offering this classic horror flick for free with ads!

This is one of the many “killer animal” movies that came out following the wild success of Spielberg’s Jaws, and it’s also one of the more popular from the movement.

15. Cube

If you’re a horror fan, chances are you’re quite familiar with this movie and the franchise it spawned. While most of the sequels were of dubious quality, the original Cube is still an excellent film to revisit every now and then.

This is the movie that put Vincenzo Natali on the map, and he has gone on to develop an excellent career with films like Splice and In The Tall Grass. He also worked on popular television series like Westworld, Hannibal, The Stand and more.

16. Body Bags

A horror anthology movie directed by the legendary John Carpenter (The Thing, Halloween)? Sign us up! If you’re a horror fan and you haven’t seen this movie yet, do yourself a favor and check this one out. Carpenter himself plays the main character who tells us all the stories in the film. In addition to his excellent performance, other notable horror directors also made appearances in the film.

Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and Wes Craven (The Hills Have Eyes, A Nightmare on Elm Street) both have minor roles in the movie. Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead, Darkman) also makes an appearance, as does Roger Corman (Little Shop of Horrors). Did we mention Mark Hamill (Star Wars) plays the lead role in one of the horror stories? Needless to say, there’s a lot to love about this movie!

17. Open Windows

Most people know Elijah Woods from his performance as Frodo Baggins in Lord of the Rings. However, over the past decade, he has made quite an impact in the world of horror movies. Not only did he play the main role in the remake of Maniac, but he also more recently starred in the wonderfully twisted Come to Daddy.

Open Windows is another horror film he worked on, and it’s pretty darn entertaining. This is a fairly interesting and somewhat unique take on the found footage genre. Sasha Grey (The Girlfriend Experience, Entourage) stars alongside Elijah Woods playing a famous actress, which isn’t too much of a stretch for her!

18. Dark Skies

This is one of those studio-made horror movies that was definitely trying to fit a certain aesthetic, and as a result it feels like it has a thin veneer of unreality on top of everything.

That said, this was actually one of the better studio produced horror flicks from its era, and it’s an especially great option for anyone who is interested in the extra-terrestrial.

19. Grizzly

Much like Piranha, this is yet another one of those “killer animal” movies that came out following the popularity of Jaws. Rather than a killer shark, this movie features a killer bear.

As in Jaws, the political undertone of wealthy people being unwilling to stop the problem is also present in Grizzly. While it might not be the best movie of this movement, it’s definitely worth watching just to see how it ends. Trust me, it’s way more crazy than you might think!

20. Willow Creek

What if I told you that Bobcat Goldthwait (Shakes the Clown, Scrooged) directed a horror movie? What if I said it was actually pretty good? This found footage horror follows a young couple on the hunt for proof of the existence of Bigfoot. While it might not be the most incredible movie you’ll ever see, it’s still pretty entertaining.

In recent years, Bobcat Goldthwait has made more of a name for himself as a director. If you haven’t seen any of his directorial work, consider watching World’s Greatest Dad and God Bless America.

In addition to all the other services offering free horror movies with ads, Youtube also has their own selection of spooky films you can watch. These are some of the best free with ads options, but there are also over 1,500 free horror movies on Youtube.

1. Poltergeist

This cult classic is honestly one of my personal favorites. Directed by Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), the film is chock full of amazing special effects and absolutely disturbing imagery.

One of my favorite little tidbits about this movie is that they used actual human skeletons during filming and did not inform the actors. The scene where the mother slides into the pool of dead bodies? All of them were actual skeletons!

 

2. Teen Wolf

This cult classic is another family-friendly horror title that fans of 80’s films will almost certainly enjoy. Starring none other than Michael J. Fox (Back to the Future), there’s plenty to love about this movie.

When a teenager finds out that his father passed down a case of lycanthropy to him, he decides to accept his destiny. Eventually, the movie devolves into a strange sports flick with a werewolf playing basketball. Is it weird? Definitely. Is it fun? Absolutely.

 

3.  Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

This classic horror film was so popular that it spawned several remakes in the 50-60 years following its release. If you’ve seen one of the films inspired by Invasion of the Body Snatchers, you definitely owe it to yourself to see the original as well.

As with many horror flicks from this generation, the story is of course very anti-communist, because it was made during the red scare.

The fact that it went on to inspire so many other movies is indicative of just how much that political period in American history has influenced even modern filmmaking.

4. Halloween H20

This is one of the less popular Halloween sequels, but if you’re a fan of the franchise, at least this one movie is free to watch with ads!

At this point, the Halloween movies are very far removed from their roots, but they still managed to bring back Jamie Lee Curtis and of course Michael Myers makes a return as well!

5. Species

If you’re looking for some mid-90’s cheese to enjoy, this is a pretty good option. Some fans even swear by this movie, insisting it’s one of the better horror movies from this generation. To be fair, there were a lot of great character actors in this title. 

Natasha Henstridge (Ghosts of Mars) plays the lead role. Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs), Ben Kingsley (Schindler’s List), and Alfred Molina (Spider-man 2) also have minor roles.
